- What inspired the choice of using a firefly as the protagonist in “Fenix and the Firework Fliers”?
I’ve always been captivated by fireflies. I saw an image of fireflies in a tree a few years ago that was so beautiful, I’d originally been thinking about a more artistically illustrated book, but things are always in flux and my collaborator knew this illustrator.
- How did your respective roles as mother and daughter shape the characters of Fenix and her mother in the book?
I don’t think that came into play in story creation, but we had a great time doing the photos for this book, and of course, I always think of her when I’m adding movement.
- Did the dynamics of your own relationship with your daughter influence the portrayal of the mother/daughter relationship within the narrative?
This is a story about two friends, Fenix and Bolt.
